About
Welcome to our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): “Values in European Union Foreign Policy”!
The course material is a joint effort by scholars of the ValEUs network, which combines the strong interdisciplinary expertise of twenty partner universities from five continents to scrutinise the European Union‘s foreign policy and attacks on its foundational values. In a total of 13 lectures, we will introduce you to various interdisciplinary and regional perspectives on our network’s subjects (see more details below). The lectures include videos, presentations, readings, and an online exam, after which you will receive a digital course certificate.
Who can participate?
The MOOC is designed for anyone interested in learning more about how values guide EU foreign policy and how they are contested. This includes university students from various academic disciplines, as well as decision-makers, development agents, evaluators, facilitators, journalists, and others working on issues of democracy, human rights, solidarity, peace, justice, equality, and prosperity within and outside the EU.
What is the course about?
The course is divided into three parts: first, it explores theoretical perspectives on EU foreign policy; second, it examines the importance of values in EU foreign policy; and third, it highlights current contestations of these values.
It will provide you with research evidence highlighting the need for value-based foreign policymaking, as well as the knowledge and tools to critically reflect on the EU as a normative power and the challenges to its external action. Throughout the course, you will learn about the challenges of ensuring security and stability while respecting human rights standards in EU migration policy, the challenges of developing a unified and effective approach to norm contestations by right-wing populism, and many other pertinent issues.
How to participate?
Registration: The MOOC is free of charge. You can register here: https://mooc.valeus.eu/register
Workload: Participants are expected to complete the assigned readings, watch the video lectures, and study the summary slides provided on the online platform. The time required is approximately 3 hours per lecture, with a total of 13 lectures to complete the course.
Assessment: At the end of the course, participants can take an online exam consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions. Participants who take the course more than once will answer a different set of questions each time.
Certificate: Participants who complete the course and pass the exam by answering 60% of the questions correctly will receive a certificate of attendance. The ValEUs MOOC certificate will be issued digitally immediately after completion.
What is ValEUs?
The course is designed within the framework of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Policy Network: “ValEUs – Research & Education Network on Contestations to EU Foreign Policy.”
The aim of the network is to provide a realistic account of EU foreign policy, to develop alternative policy agendas, and to identify counterstrategies to value contestations. The MOOC offers interdisciplinary knowledge and training on the conceptual, methodological and policy-oriented results of the project.
